Welcome. This site (forever in the process of becoming) is devoted to the cultural history of the Newfoundland, documenting the presence of the breed in various cultural artifacts of the past several hundred years of Western civilization, with a particular emphasis on literature, painting and sculpture, and film/TV. If you're interested in seeing how Newfoundlands have found their way into other forms of cultural expression (knick-knacks, postcards, stamps, etc), I highly recommend both Nick Waters' excellent book The Newfoundland: Heritage and Art and the fascinating website The Ephemeral Newfoundland.

There are three main sections to this site; select a link to start exploring:

Newfoundlands in Literature

Newfoundlands in the Fine Arts

Newfoundlands on Screen and Stage

Plus there's something that doesn't quite fit into any of the above categories: this annotated list of famous Newfoundland owners.

If you know of anything that should be listed here but isn't, or if you see something that needs correction, or just have something to suggest or say, please don't hesitate to send me an email.
