The Captain's Return
by
Harry Weber

The Captain's Return is located on the riverfront of St. Louis, Missouri, USA, just north of the Gateway Arch. Created by American sculptor Harry Weber (b. 1942), the bronze sculpture was installed in 2006 to commemorate the bicentennial of the return of Lewis and Clark to St. Louis. (Due to frequent flooding, the statue was removed from its original location in 2014, restored, then moved closer to the Arch — and 17 feet higher than its previous location — in 2016.)

Although Weber opted to include a depiction of Seaman, the evidence that Lewis' famous Newfoundland made it back to St. Louis is inconclusive. For more on Seaman and his fate, check out this page here at The Culutured Newf.

Seaman as depicted in this statue does not closely resemble Newfoundlands of today, though as early depictions of Newfoundlands indicate, the breed in the early 19th Century was often shown or described as having a shorter, curly coat.
