Verschuur (1812-1874) was a Dutch painter, quite successful both critically and financially, noted primarily for his animal ¯ particularly equestrian — paintings and natural scenes. He painted several works featuring Newfoundlands.
Could the larger, black dog be a Newfoundland? Possibly....
