Verschuur (1812-1874) was a Dutch painter, quite successful both critically and financially, noted primarily for his animal ¯ particularly equestrian — paintings and natural scenes. He painted several works featuring Newfoundlands.
Another Verschuur painting featuring what might be a Landseer or Landseer mix. I can't be certain if this is the same dog — Verschuur's own — which shows up in several other of his paintings, though I suspect it is.
