Arthur Loureiro

Arthur Loureiro (1853 - 1932) was a Portuguese painter (given name Artur José de Sousa Loureiro). He spent a number of years of his adult life living in France, England, and Australia, where this work was painted.

This painting, featuring what is clearly a Landseer Newfoundland, was commissionied by Charles Raymond Staples, a notorious Australian banker and land speculator who spent time in prison for fraudulent real-estate schemes; the young boy blowing bubbles is his son, also named Charles.
