Hundar (1840)
(Dogs)
(oil on canvas, 11.22" x 15.75")

by
Carl Fredrik Kiörboe

Kiörboe (1799 - 1876) was a Swedish army officer and painter (apparently born in Denmark) who specialized in animal paintings, particularly horses and dogs. He spent most of his adult life living in France.

Kirobe painted several works featuring Newfoundlands, the most important by far being the spectacular companion pieces The Inundation and The Rescue, covered in detail here at The Cultured Newf.

The standing dog in this painting looks as though it could be a mid-19th-Century Newfoundland, even though the picture's title is simply the generic Dogs (in Swedish).
