John Raphael Smith (1751 - 1812) was a British printmaker and portrait artist. This print was published in 1805 by Rudolph Ackermann.


The British Museum note on this print specifically identifes the dog as a Newfoundland. The subject of this portrait, Samuel Athawes (1734 - 1822), was a well-to-do London tobacco merchant (who corresponded with George Washington regarding the purchase of tobacco!) and politician.
