ferneley nell vagabond
The horse 'Vagabond', owned by Henry Everard Esq, and the dog 'Nell', owned by his fiancé Miss Helen Stuart (1847)
(oil on canvas, 34" x 44¼")
by
John E. Ferneley

Ferneley (1782 - 1860) — who is also identified as "John Ferneley Sr.," as his son John Ferneley Jr. was also a well-known painter (to say nothing of his son Claude Lorraine Ferneley, also an artist) — was an English painter primarily of sporting subjects, particularly race- and hunting horses. He was quite well-known and popular in his lifetime.

Several other works by Ferneley are listed here in the "Fine Arts" section of The Cultured Newf, and while it is not possible to say with absolute certainty that all of them depict Newfoundlands, it is certainly the case that the dog in this painting, while having something of a retriever-ish aspect, also looks very much like the other (likely) Newfoundlands Ferneley has painted.
