A Chestnut Hunter (1864)
by
Claude Lorraine Ferneley

C. L. Ferneley (1822 - 1891) was an English painter, one of the sons of John Ferneley (Sr.), the renowned English sporting painter who also has some works featured at The Cultured Newf. Named after the famous and hugely influential 17th Century French painter Claude Lorraine, C. L. Ferneley was also, like his father and his brother John Ferneley Jr., known primarily as a sporting artist.

The dog pictured in this painting, the full name of which is A Chestnut Hunter with a Roan Pony and Dog before a Stable, may be a Newfoundland. — certainly the dog's size and color suggest that it is.
