[ Eckstein / A Newfoundland Dog Saves a Child from Drowning (1803)]

John (born Johann) Eckstein (1736 - 1817) was a German painter and lithographer who worked much of his adult life in England and America as well as in Germany; he is the father of the painter John Eckstein Jr.

This mezzotint of Eckstein's painting (I've not been able to locate an image of the painting itself) was engraved by Richard Earlom (1743 - 1822) and published in London in 1803 by Robert Laurie & James Whittle.

This image is one of a pair created and published together by the same individuals mentioned in the previous paragraph. You can see the companion image here at The Cultured Newf.
