A Saddled Chestnut Hunter and Black Dog in Courtyard (1833)
by
David Dalby of York

Not to be confused with plain old David Dalby, another English animal painter, David Dalby of York (1794-1836) was from a family of painters (his brother John is represented here at The Cultured Newf, as is plain old David Dalby, for that matter) who are known almost exclusively for their sporting paintings and equestrian portraits.

While the dog in this painting is not specifically identified as a Newfoundland, it bears a marked resemblance to other Newfs of the time.
