A Newfoundland Dog on a Seashore
by
Edmund Bristow

Bristow (1787 - 1876) was a self-taught English painter, best known in his lifetime for his animal paintings. He was, apparently, a bit of a character; the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography reports that "Bristow was a man of independent eccentric views, would not work to order, and on occasion . . . refused to sell even his finished productions."

His popularity had waned considerably by the time he died.
