[ Barfoot / The Dog ]

James Richard Barfoot (1794 - 1863) was a British painter and draughtsman. This image dates from approximately 1840 - 1842 (London: William Darton).

Intended to illustrate the usefulness of dogs to humans, this lithograph centrally features a Newfoundland which has just rescued a child from drowning. Around this image are a number of small scenes showing dogs performing other duties. The leftmost scene on the top row is entitled "Newfoundland sledge" and shows four Newfoundlands pulling a loaded sledge.
