The Rescue

This work cannot be dated or identified with any precision; it is credited as "English School," and was painted sometime in the 19th Century. It seems highly likely that this work — with its Newfoundland dog having rescued a sailor, presumably from the storm-tossed ship in the right middle background — demonstrates the influence of Sir Edwin Landseer's Newfoundland paintings, perhaps particularly Off to the Rescue and Saved; if painted after the latter work, then The Rescue would date from the very late 1850s at the earliest.
