[ Sable Chief ]

Sable Chief was a Newfoundland dog who served as the mascot of the 2nd Batallion of the Newfoundland Regiment during World War I. A hugely popular figure among both the general public and his 'fellow' soldiers, Sable Chief never saw combat, but served as a morale booster and symbol of Newfoundland's contribution to the war effort. Sable Chief was accidentally killed by a vehicle in a military camp, after which his taxidermied remains were on display in various political and military association facilities for many years. His remains were placed in storage due to deterioration of the coat, but in 2006 his coat was restored and Sable Chief is now on display in The Rooms, the Provincial Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador in St. John's, Newfoundland — where you can even buy a "Sable Chief" plush stuffie!
