[ London Times ]

This newspaper, most correctly known simply as The Times, began publication in 1785 and continues to this day.

The July 5, 1870 edition of The Times published a brief legal note about a court case involving an attack by a Newfoundland dog.

Both plaintiff and defendant were widowed shopkeepers; the plaintiff sued "to recover damages for injuries sustained . . . through being severely bitten by a large Newfoundland dog of the defendant's."

Although there was no evidence to establish that the dog was a danger or had ever bitten anyone before, and "numerous witnesses" who testified "that the dog had always been quiet and good-tempered," the jury found for the plaintiff, awarding her 26£ for damages.
